The Occupied Times 29 is out!

The central theme of this issue, pulling together much of the visuals and written content, revolves around questions of colonialism, “race”, and racism, both their formation and continuation into the present day.

Our centre-spread comprises a series of sketched maps, made by Škart’, scribbled down during encounters as their creators spoke to people in an asylum centre in Serbia. Each map traces perilous journeys from Syria, Somalia, Pakistan and Sierra Leone to the outer borders of Fortress Europe.

We have essays from Alana Lentin and Frank Wilderson exploring the enduring hold relations of “race”, both structural and ideological, have over contemporary politics. Lentin’s focus is the prevailing school of thought that traces racism back only as far as Nazi Germany, which both ignores the preceding 500 years of colonialism and allows continuing oppression to be denied, leaving ideas around racism “frozen”. Wilderson, a foundational thinker of the Afro-Pessimist tradition, suggests that the role of Blackness within Humanity is unique, that Blackness entails Social Death and is inseparable from an ongoing slave relation.

Off theme, Morgan Potts offers a piece which riffs on the everyday antagonisms which face people presenting and living in ways that refuse to conform to existing dominant logics of gender. Meanwhile, Rosa Gilbert speaks with Communist ex-prisoner Mario Rossi (an alias) about the current conditions of anti-fascism and the Left in his home town of Florence, and in Italy more broadly.

This issue also sees the continuation of our visual “How-to” guides, this time the subject is evictions and bailiffs – with legal information and tips on how to resist the record levels of evictions taking place, whilst attempting to place eviction resistance within the broader context of organising aiming to secure access to housing.

This issue also sees us launch a round of fundraising – this being the last print issue we can publish with current funding. A short piece by the OT collective outlines the condition we find the publication in and the directions we hope, with your help, to be able to take our production in.

Copies of OT29 will be distributed at events and within communities throughout the coming months. You can also find us on the shelves of various outlets across the capital, including Housmans, Black Gull Books, Banner Repeater, 56a & Freedom Bookshop. The full list of stockists can be found on the OT Stockists Map on our website.

Truth Trijektor Shines A Light http://occupydesign.org.uk/truth-trijektor-shines-a-light/ http://occupydesign.org.uk/truth-trijektor-shines-a-light/#respond Mon, 14 Dec 2015 01:10:12 +0000 http://occupydesign.org.uk/?p=1045 1512Trijektor01

During the COP21 Climate Summit in Paris we projected a variety of messages using our ‘Truth Trijektor’ mobile Trike based guerilla projection system at two targets, the World Bank Head Offices and a huge Ad for EDF adjacent to their Head Office, which claimed they were working to keep World tempartures to 2° or warming (this is more than enough to cause us to lose a livable Planet). We demanded ‘system change not climate change’ and to keep temperatures to 1.5° which is the known safe limit and one called for by all indigeinous groups and those in the Global South who will be/are already the first affected.

These actions were part of a larger mass civil disobedience called ‘Climate Games‘ that provided a framework for actions that defied the French governments State of Emergency brought in after the November terrorist attacks.

Over 400 actions can be seen on the Climate Games website, including our reports, here and here.

As part of our friends Brandalism’s amazing action we were part of a 600 site ad takeover in Paris for the start of the COP21 Summit that will still fail to deliver the change we need to have a safe Climate.

Working with Global Justice Now and the Jubilee Debt Campaign we made did these projections to support the Greek people in their fight with the bankers and bureuacrats of the EU. In giant letters against the German embassy in West London, below a a mock-up of German Chancellor Angela Merkel  as the three wise monkeys (‘see no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil’). The series of projections also included a the slogan “OXI – no to Debt and Austerity.”

Propagate! Graphics Against The Housing Crisis http://occupydesign.org.uk/propagate-graphics-against-the-housing-crisis/ http://occupydesign.org.uk/propagate-graphics-against-the-housing-crisis/#respond Fri, 05 Jun 2015 11:49:31 +0000 http://occupydesign.org.uk/?p=928 housingcrisis

Occupy Design has recently been part of setting up the PROPAGATE Collective whose aim is to co-create visuals to assist the growing grassroots movements fighting the privatisation, genrtification, increasing costs and general destruction of housing in our cities. Alongside Artist’s Organisation no.w.here we have set up a workshop to do something about it, here’s what is planned:

All over the UK and most visibly in London we are facing another unprecedented wave of gentrification with a rise in house prices, and rents, evictions of families and sell-offs of public housing. We believe that political communication is capable of making the issue bold and visible, showing the different forces involved in social cleansing and displacement of working families from edgy areas and to mobilise people.

This event calls for residents, activists, artists and designers to come together for a weekend of workshops about how to communicate the housing crisis and the politics of gentrification. The workshop aims to enable participants to express their anger and demands through discussion and creativity, develop them into a visual manifestation that communicates on the streets.

We will be using Risograph printing to mass produce our voices and distribute them wide and loud. You don’t have to be an artist or a designer to take part! Participants should come with ideas, slogans and images and be prepared to discuss them collectively and work in collaboration to develop them into visual form.

Book your free place via eventbrite. Spaces for the workshop are limited.

Time To Act! http://occupydesign.org.uk/time-to-act/ http://occupydesign.org.uk/time-to-act/#comments Sun, 04 Jan 2015 17:17:53 +0000 http://occupydesign.org.uk/?p=716 miltonglaser

“Forget everything you think you know about global warming. The really inconvenient truth is that it’s not about carbon—it’s about Capitalism. The convenient truth is that we can seize this existential crisis to transform our failed economic system and build something radically better.”

Naomi Klein, This Changes Everything

Time is running out. Climate Change is happening and without a serious global plan to replace our profit driven, fossil fuelled economy our very existence as a species is threatened this century.

But the Climate Crisis is not just a threat but an opportunity to chart a different course, one that shifts the Economy away from Capitalism to one that is more just, democratic and resilient that we all can share.

2015 is a crucial year for the climate. In December, governments will come together in Paris at the COP21 UN Climate Summit to strike a new deal for the climate – we must make our voices heard, we know that they will not act unless we make them and we can no longer accept more of the same.

We want your Posters and Memes for the Movement to use as an Agit-Prop Army of images to bolster the campaign on the streets of Paris in December and on the walls of social media throughout the year.

See the work already submitted. Upload your work on our Time To Act gallery page or send your artwork to cop21@occupydesign.org.uk
